Osteoarthritis of the knee is a common and painful condition that limits movement and reduces mobility. Knee orthoses are the ideal solution to remedy the condition and delay surgery.

More about the knee orthosis

Causes

Osteoarthritis of the knee can be genetic in origin, the result of trauma, or caused by repetitive sporting activity. The disease is often silent, manifesting itself first as pain, then as swelling of the joint. Some patients also experience cracking or locking, making knee movements extremely painful. Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis, a degenerative disease of the knee cartilage, especially on the inside. It affects around 10% of people over the age of 55, rising to 30% by the age of 65. The knee and hip are the joints most affected. The disease affects both men and women. The internal compartment of the knee supports some 60-80% of the body's weight, which explains why 90% of osteoarthritis cases affect this area.

Symptoms

A knee affected by osteoarthritis presents characteristic symptoms of the disease. The joint is painful after a period of rest, with morning stiffness even when the knee is "cold". Certain activities, such as climbing stairs, become particularly difficult. After prolonged activity, the knee may become swollen. In some cases, a deformity of the joint (varus) is visible on the limb. The knee affected by osteoarthritis is also less flexible than the other. A crackling noise inside the knee can be felt on touch. All these clinical signs will lead the doctor to carry out an X-ray examination to confirm the diagnosis.

How to treat knee osteoarthritis?

Treatment is primarily aimed at relieving pain and preventing it from worsening. The best-known solution is to take anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving medication, combined with functional rehabilitation with a physiotherapist and physiotherapy sessions. However, to effectively relieve the pain of knee osteoarthritis and promote complete healing, the use of a knee orthosis is recommended. When knee unloading is not necessary, the articulated compressive knee brace is the most viable and reliable solution. These knee braces are designed to reduce knee swelling while stabilizing the knee. The weave of the brace allows moisture and perspiration to escape, preventing a feeling of confinement. A knee brace is an external orthopedic device consisting of a metal or carbon fiber frame molded to the shape of the leg, which relieves pain and promotes freedom of movement.
