What is knee osteoarthritis?
Osteoarthritis of the knee is a degenerative disease of the cartilage in the knee. Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis. 10% of people over 55 have it. This percentage increases to 30% at the age of 65. The knee and hip are the most affected joints. This disease is as present in men as it is in women. The inner compartment of the knee carries about 60 to 80% of the body weight. It is affected in 90% of cases of osteoarthritis.
The symptoms of osteoarthritis of the knee
A knee with osteoarthritis will show some characteristic symptoms of the disease. The joint is painful even when resting. There is early morning stiffness even when the knee is "cold". Some activities will be particularly difficult to negotiate especially using stairs.
